AZ Backers Call SCOTUS Contraception Ruling 'Victory'

(Julianne Logan, Cronkite News Service) Arizona lawmakers and pro-life groups applauded Monday's U.S.  Supreme Court ruling that “closely held” businesses cannot be forced to provide certain contraceptives as part of health-care coverage for their employees.

Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne, Sen. John McCain and Rep. Trent Franks, R-Glendale, had all filed briefs in support of Hobby Lobby, whose owners said the contraceptive requirement under Obamacare violated their Christian beliefs. In a 5-4 opinion, the high court agreed, saying the government's interest in requiring coverage did not outweigh the owners' rights.

But the court was careful to say that does not mean that religious belief could be used as a cover for discriminatory hiring or refusal to provide immunizations, for example.
