Preventing Drownings Takes Vigilance

Kathy Cline (KFYI)- Phoenix authorities are urging parents and others to keep a close eye on kids near water.

Kelly Liebermann is a community education specialist with the Phoenix Fire Department.

He says you might not notice a drowning until you see someone at the bottom of the pool.

"It's not this Hollywood show. [When people are drowning] they are down in the water, they're sinking. When their head pops out, they're trying to gasp for air."

So far this swimming season, there have been 30 fatal drownings in Maricopa and Pinal counties. Emergency workers have responded to over 100 drowning calls.
